When old keys are out there, whether lost, stolen or still held by an ex-housemate, you have two choices: rekey your locks or replace them. Both stop the old keys from working. Here's how to choose.
What is rekeying?
Inside most locks is a set of small pins that line up when the right key goes in. Rekeying means a locksmith swaps those pins for a new set, so the lock works with a new key and the old keys no longer fit. The lock body stays on your door.
What is replacing?
Replacing means removing the lock and fitting a new one. You get a new mechanism and new keys.
When rekeying makes sense
- The lock is in good condition and works smoothly
- You're happy with how secure it is
- You just want the old keys to stop working
- You'd like several doors to work on one key
When replacing makes sense
- The lock is worn, sticky or damaged
- It was forced in a break-in
- It's a basic latch with no deadlocking
- You want an upgrade, such as a better deadlock or a smart lock
Which is cheaper?
Rekeying is usually cheaper because you're keeping the existing lock. But spending money to rekey a lock that's already failing is a false economy. A locksmith should tell you honestly which option is better for each door.
