A break-in is upsetting, and it's hard to think straight afterwards. This checklist covers the practical steps in the right order.
1. Make sure you're safe, then call the police
If you think someone may still be inside, don't go in. Move somewhere safe and call 000. If the offender has gone, call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 to report it.
2. Don't clean up yet
Try not to touch doors, windows or anything that has been moved until the police have been. Take photos of the damage and anything missing.
3. Secure your home the same day
A forced door or broken lock means your home can't be locked. Call an emergency locksmith to:
- Replace damaged or forced locks
- Repair or reinforce strike plates and door jambs
- Make every door and window lockable before night
Twistie Locksmith attends break-ins across the Inner West 24/7 on 02 9169 2871.
4. Change locks if keys were taken
If keys, bags or wallets were stolen, assume the thief knows where you live. Rekey or change your locks straight away.
5. Contact your insurer
Call your home or contents insurer with your police event number, photos and a list of what's missing. Keep receipts for repairs, including locksmith invoices.
6. Fix the weak spot
Work out how they got in and strengthen it: a proper deadlock on a back door, window locks, a sliding door bar or a lock on the side gate. We're happy to look over your home and suggest what's worth doing.
