Being locked out is stressful, but it's rarely a disaster. Here's what we suggest, as locksmiths who handle lockouts across Enmore and the Inner West every week.
1. Check every door and window, safely
Walk around and check the back door, side doors and any windows on the ground floor. Don't climb onto roofs or balconies, and don't force a window. A broken window or a fall costs far more than a locksmith.
2. Think about who has a spare key
A housemate, partner, family member, neighbour or your property manager may have one. If you rent, your agent may be able to help during business hours.
3. Don't try to force the lock
Credit cards, screwdrivers and coat hangers usually damage the lock or the door frame, and turn a simple lockout into a lock replacement. Modern deadlocks can't be opened this way anyway.
4. Call a local locksmith
A local locksmith will usually get to you faster and charge less than a national call centre that sends whoever is free. When you call, have ready:
- Your address, plus building or unit access details
- The type of door and lock, if you know it
- Whether anyone, especially a child or pet, is inside

5. Have proof of address ready
A good locksmith will always ask for proof that you live there. Once you're inside, show ID with your address, a lease or a bill. It's a sign they take your security seriously.
6. Stop it from happening again
- Leave a spare key with someone you trust, not under the mat
- Consider a keypad or smart lock
- If your keys were lost or stolen, rekey your locks
